“Backward” is a word often used to describe the state of Orissa, located on the eastern coast of India. Heavily entrenched by the Hindu caste system,  Orissa is one of the poorest states in the country, with 47 percent of the 36.7 million population living below the poverty line. Orissa has a huge tribal population with 88 percent of the state’s residents residing in rural areas.
